Club Championship Road Race

Having got back into the swing of things a bit recently with 3 Stag Trophy Races and the Round Leighton Buzzard Relay in the last 3 months, we were finally able to get back to racing Club Championship races, with the first in the road champs this year taking place at Blisworth for the 5 mile distance.

As is often the case at Blisworth the evening turned out to be one perfect for running with an otherwise overcast day turning into some welcome evening sun with very little wind. Those who have done the course though will know that it’s not the weather that you really need to worry about!

The first mile begins with a downhill start with gradually turns into a sprint as you try to take advantage of the steep hill to get ahead of your target race pace. Before you know it, the second mile arrives and with it the start of a steep climb back out of the village of Blisworth that keeps going up for most of the next 2 miles. The fourth mile is fairly flat in comparision before the final mile gradually falls away leading to a fast finish.

This year the race started in waves based on surname which created a chaotic feel, especially in the first mile as all different paces passed each other and the faster runners had to do a bit of evasive weaving. However, it was great to be racing again and so I’m sure there were very few grumbles.

Eleven LBAC runners turned out in the Northamptonshire countryside and despite a severe lack of racing over the last 18 months, some excellent times were posted! PBs were ran by Neil Green, James Lowe, Bob Dickinson, Will Eastman and Amy Killick, with Bob posting his first run for the club since joining early this year. Amy also grabbed another Club record to her name and take home the Club Championship to finish as second lady in 29:33.

Pete Mackrell pushed himself through the field overtaking all the other Buzzards in the field to finish 12th overall as Club Champion in 28:10.

As a club, the Senior men finished 4th with the veteran men finishing on the podium in 2nd place.

With 5 PBs and a club record, not a bad haul for the first race back this season!
