Greensand Ridge Relay 2015

The Greensand Ridge Relay 2015 – crusted ports, old Madeiras and shandy drinkers.

I was standing next to one of LBAC’s more cerebral runners at the start of leg 4, waiting for Warren to appear. Chris Williams and I were having a conversation about murder. It’s true that previously Fiona and Chris had had a disagreement about pick up times for the GSRR, but Fi’s life was safe. No, the murder in question occurred in 1962 at the end of my leg 4 in the layby. Chris mentioned the case of James Hanratty who murdered a scientist and his wife and was subsequently hanged by the state for his crimes. Recently, Chris recalled, Hanratty was shown to be justly convicted of his crimes based on the exhumation of his body for DNA tests. Now, this is all too close for comfort. I’m a scientist and I’m running leg 4 and looking up at the start of leg 4, I was going to be murdered early on if I pushed too hard. DNA evidence might not be needed to show that I had run a bad leg, but I know my peers would scrutinise in a courtly fashion via Strava any cock-ups that may occur. read more

BMAF 5K Nationals

By Gail Duckworth

While the younger members of the Club were competing in the East Anglian League in Luton I was the opposite end of the country in Horwich near Bolton.

The 5K Road National Championship has taken place here for several years mainly because it is incorporated in a weekend of various events including triathlon and cycling and running. The small town closes it roads while the events take place and having a traffic free location is always a bonus. Also, it enables the BMAF to have a Masters only race rather than being incorporated into an event. read more

Run Bedford 10K

I don’t really know why I entered, I am not a runner, I don’t particularly like running but it is getting harder to just sit back and do nothing when the rest of the Killick household are so active! The parkruns give me a bit of a focus but I can’t make them every week so entering an event gave me something to aim for.

I think if memory serves me right I ran the Balmoral 10K in the 90’s – I haven’t been able to track down my time but I know it was bad as I hadn’t trained due to a knee injury and I was second or third last (a sprint at the end ensured I wasn’t last!). I then ran the Whipsnade Zoo 10K in 2010 in 76:49. That’s my long and varied running history (there have been the odd 5K). For Run Bedford I was aiming for 1:05 and having done a 1:05 in a training run I hoped it would be better of course. read more

Bupa London 10,000

By Gail Duckworth

For the first time ever, Leighton Buzzard Athletic Club were part of a major 10K event.

With the club continuing its positive progression due to more members and improving standards, LBAC were able to enter both men’s and women’s teams in the Southern Road Relay Championships this year and therefore qualified for club entries to the BUPA London 10,000 organised by the London Marathon.

One of the UK’s premier events has an iconic start in the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace and then weaves through closed London roads passing sights such as Nelson’s Column and St Pauls Cathedral. The support through London is fantastic with thousands of people lining the whole route and cheering some 12000 runners of all standards. read more

Suffering from Rounders

By Adam Haylock

It might have been a Friday night, but before we could indulge in the usual frolics whether that’s beers, vino, takeaways or a posh meal out we had some business to attend too! This year’s 5 mile club championship took place in the pleasant Northamptonshire village of Blisworth. Fifteen Buzzards decided to end the week with this race. I’m not sure how I would describe a 5 miler, longer than a parkrun although shorter than a 10k, either way it’s fast and it hurts. This was to be my 3rd race at Blisworth, last year with LBAC and 14 years ago when I took part alongside my sister who at the time was a Wootton Road runner. read more
