“That’s an awful long way to go for a 10k” was the cry I got from fellow runners when I explained I was travelling down to Somerset to run the Pilton Festival Run this weekend.
But the chance to run around the Glastonbury festival site was too much to pass up and I was looking forward to something a bit different when travelling down there on the Saturday evening (after watching the mighty Luton Town! – ed.). Having been to the festival 4 times and going again in 2015 I was looking forward to running through fields that I’m used to being covered in tents, toilets and teepees, but would now just be me, other runners and the Worthy Farm cows.
After a gentle warm-up round the sights of Cassiobury Park on Saturday four intrepid LBACers ventured all the way to the distant lands of Tring for their 33rd annual Ridgeway Run. It is an approximate 15K (9.5 miles) starting from the edge of Tring and heading out onto the Ridgeway via the monument and completing a 6 mile loop before heading back for a couple of flat miles to the finish at the cricket club.
It was a lovely morning for running when Andy turned up at the club to grab one of the 60 late entries available on the day and was met by a whole bunch of people from other local clubs aho had decided to double up their weekend races.
On 10 May 2009 I ran 1 hour 21 mins and 10 seconds for the half marathon in Leeds. I felt on top of the world that day and really didn't think I'd ever beat that time. Fast forward to 2014 and things have been clicking. I've been running times that I didn't believe I'd ever be able to and absolutely loving it.
I know I should have been with the rest of the team in Cassiobury Park, but I selfishly signed up for the Perkins Great Eastern Half Marathon in Peterborough. I'm (slightly) ashamed to say I've been picking races recently that are flat and this one looked perfect.
Fifty-one, yes 51 LBAC members made it to Cassiobury Park in Watford for the beginning of the 2014/15 cross-country season. It has to be said that it was not your typical cross-country weather, with the autumn sunshine making it a very pleasant day for a run around this varied course.
As ever the U11's had to be there bright and early for the 11:30 start, with the girls leading the way.For many of them it was a completely new experience, but after a summer of solid training none of them were overawed and they put in a fantastic team performance. They were 5th out of 16 teams on the day with seven girls running strongly around the parkland loop. Niquole Carter led them home in 15th place with Zara Brooks, Millie Hawes and Julia Bell all finishing in the top half of the field too. Magnificent team running also came from Isobel Haynes, Ellie DeVille & Sophie Hawes who ensured that they took points off just about all the other teams.
