FVS Relays

Last Tuesday, Tom May managed took a ladies and a mens team over to Stevenage for the 3K relays organised by Fairlands Valley Spartans. It is great fun event, that we have done for the last few years with 42 women's teams and 57 men's teams competing around a park in the town.

The ladies team consisted of Laura Smith, Jane Sauer, fresh from her PB in the Luton 5K and Liz Miller with her races shoes on for the second time in a week as well. With that many teams running, there are always a number that you can have a battle with, and on this occasion it was Royston Runners that Liz just managed to hold off in the finishing straight to bring the team home in a creditable 22nd position. The ladies ran 12:29, 12:47 and 15:51 respectively over what is a pretty undulating course. read more

Wardown Park 5K

Well, some things are just like buses. You don't have a race victiry for years and then two come along in one season! It would seem that fatherhood is doing Simon Coombes no harm at all as he took his second road race victory of the summer in the county 5K championships at Wardown Park in Luton. His time of 16:37 put him over 30 seconds in front of his nearest challenger and lead home a good qaulity showing by LBAC.

Behind him, Ben Corfield was someway off his best form, but looking to improve over the summer months and clocked 17:46 to finish 8th and Joby Hobbs took the 3 club place in 18:56. Fred Watt, Tim Bacon and John Adam also competed in the men's event with Fred finishing as 2nd V60 in Bedfordshire. read more

British Masters Champs

Last weekend our resident international athlete went off to Cardiff to compete in the British National Masters (Vets to most of us)Championships. In very windy conditions, Gail annihilated the rest of the field to lead the race from gun to tape and take the V55 gold medal with a time of 19:22. This was a great effort, when running twelve and a half laps on her own. This is a warm up to the European championships in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary later this month! Just for good measure, Gail also ran at Watford last week and is now the top ranked V55 in the country over 1500m after running 5:20 for a distance which is not her speciality! read more

Cranfield 5

On Friday 2nd July 18 LBAC athletes went over to Cranfield University to compete in the club and county championships over 5 miles. On a humid night on a fairly flat course, some excellent performances were put in by the various club members.

On the ladies front, Amanda Martin managed to go around the course at under 10 minute mile pace for the first time ever and so is already planning her next venture. In front of Amanda, both Jane Sauer and Amy Inchley were very pleased with their respective PB’s! It was Jane’s first 5 mile race but was nonetheless delighted at the time she acheived just behind Amy who crossed the line smiling as both ducked under 40 minutes. The only other lady to venture onto student territory was Jill Richardson who took the club title by being a second under 38 minutes. read more

Luton 5 & MK 10K

Last Friday Fiona Towell was Leighton's sole representative in the John O'Callaghan 5 mile race in Luton. Her trip over there was definitely worthwhile though as she continued her run of improving form this year by achieving a new PB over the distance. Fi was delighted to clock 43.27 which was 20 seconds quicker than she has ever run before. She then managed to follow that up with the final glory leg for the victorious ladies team in the Greensand Ridge Relay, so all in all a good weekend. read more
