We’re bigger than Bertha

“Are you running the Bearbrook 10k?” This was the cry I heard when dropping off Glen Turner from the Doug Anderson 5k.  “It’s my Birthday and there will most likely be a BBQ afterwards in the afternoon” was the bait to which a well renowned carnivore like myself could not easily refuse!  With this to look forward to I was signed up straight away by my ever willing race entry co-ordinator Kate Johnson.

Fast forward 11 days through a period of pretty much sunny and warm weather, the forecast was for the tail end of Hurricane Bertha to have an effect on race day.  Imagine my relief when waking up to a dry morning and thinking we might have got away with this and get a dry race, think again Hallworth was the response I got from Kate and Glen when the torrential rain and wind started on the journey to the race. read more

Doug Anderson 5K

For a small club of around 50 senior members, there was no better display of the quality of runners than at the Doug Anderson 5k on Wednesday night. Up against mammoth clubs such as Bedford Harriers and Marshall Milton Keynes, who can quite easily field a group of runners for a race larger than our total membership, we managed to win the race, place 3 men in the top 10, win the men’s team prize, field a further 9 runners including our president on her continued return to running, achieve 4 all time PBs and at least two other season PBs. We even managed to field a small contingent of well placed supporters and cheerers on this pretty flat course around Bedford Park. read more

Waddesdon Manor Crazy Hill 5K

Six of us Buzzard runners turned up to the Waddesdon Manor 5k on Wednesday.Driving up the hill to the car park and the start I began to suspect that this course wasn’t going to be strictly ’undulating’ as described on the website.As it turned out it was a 2.5k dash down the hill then a 2.5k crawl back up it.After a very quick start from the front of the house to the fountain, the downhill was a welcome relief.It was difficult to know how quickly to do the dash down the hill as I was aware that a few minutes later I would be running back up it.After a bit of holding back I decided to up the pace a bit and make the most of the downhill.Seeing the quicker runners passing in the opposite direction to start their way back up the hill was a bit of a relief as I knew I was almost halfway through and it gave us chance to slur a few ‘well dones’ to our team mates. read more

Luton 10K

On Sunday 20 July, 9 LBAC runners made the relatively short trek to the Luton 10k, which this year doubled as the county 10k championships and also the club 10k champs.

 

It was an overcast but very muggy morning, with the mercury loitering around the 20-degree mark. Various barbecues and weddings the previous evening provided plenty of material for the usual pre-race excuses, but once 11am approached the excuses were replaced with game faces.

 

The race took place at Luton Hoo (Luton I said), with the Venue 360 complex acting as race HQ. The facilities there are fantastic, with nice changing rooms, showers and, most importantly, a brand new bar on the top floor for post race bevvies. read more

Shearing some time off a Guinness World Record

Me: “Richard, how was your run today?”

Richard: “Yeah it was good thanks, good to be back running here after the floods. I’ve got lots of events coming up, I’m volunteering at the Commonwealth Games and I’m going to try to break another world record and raise some more money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.”

Me: Break another world record?

Richard: “Yeah, a couple of years ago in the Great North Run I broke the world record for the fastest half marathon in an animal costume. But a couple of people broke it after that, I think the record now is about 1 hour 30 minutes. You could probably break the current record, I’ve still got my sheep outfit if you want to have a go. Just find a half marathon, log onto the Guinness World Records website and register your attempt. read more
