Lots of Records at the Stag

The first Stag trophy race of the 2015/16 season saw numerous records set for the event.

  • There were 33 people running: It has been very rare to ever get more than 25, which is what the scoring system is based on so to see so many people out sprinting round the course is brilliant
  • We had 9 people who had never run the Stag before
  • There was a sixty-one year age gap between the oldest and youngest participants
  • There were 21 people who completed the course ahead of their handicap time!

So well done everyone that came along and lets try to keep the numbers high and have a closely fought competition.

On the night, as is often the way, it was the newbies that came home first having managed to convince Dave that they would struggle to even complete the course! Sean Westrope put up the most convincing argument to come home 30 seconds ahead of Stuart Dimmock and the returning Alex Ridout.

In addition to the nine new participants there were also six PB’s on the night from Scott Towell, Chris Norman, Pete Mackrell, Sam Dear, Dominic Grimshaw and Mandy Clay. Chris in particular did this in spectacular fashion by taking 39 seconds off his previous best from 2013. read more

David Holds On

The final hill in Parson's Close saw on Wednesday saw a fierce battle between most of the leading contenders in the 2014/15 Stag Trophy scrapping it out for PB's and points.

Prior to the start of the race it had already been determined that only two people could take the 2014/15 title, with Sam Sicknote Dear having withdrawn due to man-flu and merely playing a spectator role on the night. This meant that it was a straight battle between club captain James Bell and his Monday night protégé David Killick. In all honesty it needed a tremendous run from James and a bad run from David for the positions to be changed, but this has certainly happened a few times before. read more

And then there were three!

Following the February Stag Trophy race there was still a wide open competition in terms of potential victors, with 13 people still in the hunt for the coveted award that represents the person who has shown consistent improvement throughout the season. Last night's penultimate race put something of a different complexion on things.

Sixteen members made it down to Parson's Close ready to be sent on their way by Dave and Pete. Possibly the harshest start was given to Caroline Mann, who as a brand new potential member knew nothing of the race and so arrived at Tiddenfoot for a normal run at 7:28! She was driven down to the start, given very hurried instructions and told to go! She made it around all three laps so hopefully will be slightly more prepared in April. read more

February Stag

A chilly and damp night in Leighton saw 19 members turn out for the fifth Stag Trophy race of this year's competition with many trying to work themselves into a position where they can challenge for the top spots in April at the end of term.

For someone who is usually running, it is intriguing to watch the race as gaps open and close and people fade after fast starts. Trying to guess who is going to come out at the front at the end of the race is remarkably difficult – although probably not as difficult as running up Grove Road into the wind with Pete Mack chasing you down! read more

January Stag

There was definitely something in the air this week as our recent excellent attendance levels at the Stag Trophy dropped significantly. Whether it was the new year lethargy, the bugs that have been going around or the gale that was blowing down Grovebury Road we do not know, but it meant that all those that did venture to Parson's Close were able to pick up good points for the overall standing.

The person who took most advantage from this was Fred Watt, who claims to have never won an individual Stag race in all his years of running with the club. However, running a time over a minute quicker than in December enabled him to finish comfortably ahead of the pack. Maybe it's all the parkruns he's been doing recently that has given him this fresh turn of speed. read more
